 I agree with three points:

 - We should look at font weight to help distinguish button controls from
 other controls.
 - The difference in background color between number 2 and 3 in the
 comparison image above is incredibly subtle and likely won't make a
 difference.
 - We can come up with a solution without using skeuomorphic gradients,
 which I think complicates things a bit.
