 @pfefferle I am also highly interested in this but at the moment know very
 little about all the indie web protocols that could make custom comment
 types useful. I will do more research but if you have a clear path or
 vision it would help to spell it out here so I could use it as pointers
 for my path forward.

 Collaborative editing in Gutenberg could also benefit from having custom
 comment types as a way to store notes in the editor, like the work above
 on the annotations api concluded.

 Let's all keep this alive :)
