Comment:

 Thanx for the ticket (and welcome to Trac!).

 WordPress 5.3 introduced the
 [https://make.wordpress.org/core/2019/10/09/wp-5-3-introducing-the-spread-
 operator/ spread operator] to a lot of core functions/methods.

 The [https://wordpress.org/news/2019/04/minimum-php-version-update/
 minimum version of PHP supported is 5.6.20] (starting with WordPress 5.1).

 So this is not really a `syntax error`.  You will need to update your
 version of PHP to be able to use WordPress 5.3.
