Comment:

 The HTTPS landscape has changed considerably since this ticket was opened,
 and best practice now dictates that sites should be served entirely over
 HTTPS. Due to this, I'm closing this as wontfix because it's unlikely
 anybody will be interested in addressing this particularly complex issue.
 The solution is to switch to full HTTPS.
