 Reviewing this after some time... the modern browsers "smart" behavior is
 the so called
 [https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=454172 sequential
 focus navigation starting point]. Among other things, this feature helps
 in this kind of focus losses: pressing Tab again should make the tab order
 start (more or less) from the place where focus was.

 However, this is not guaranteed to work with assistive technologies,
 especially when large portions of a page are removed or updated
 dynamically. Not to mention some browsers don't have this feature
 (typically IE 11).
