 Yeah, both approaches will work. With the AJAX we can even be "greedy" and
 run the size calculations in parallel. That would be 4 AJAX requests at
 the same time, but each will have 30 seconds to complete, chances of
 success are higher. Thinking to try that first :)

 However this is somewhat out of scope here. Opened #46707 as a follow-up.
