Comment:

 WordPress sure has some interesting features.

 `CUSTOM_USER_TABLE` is cute, but barely used, and really should be
 considered deprecated in favour of multisite.

 While I expect it will continue to function in the future, I don't think
 this particular edge case will ever get the attention needed to fix it.
