 28474.diff patch] be good enough here? Seems like the same reasoning as
 the one for [https://make.wordpress.org/core/2012/12/06/wp_image_editor-
 is-incoming/ abstracting GD from core in 3.5]. Just now noticing you wrote
 that post :)

 Namely: "We add support for Imagick by default, giving better image
 quality to those who have it available on their host."

 I'd be happy to freshen it up and test more.
