 I, too,  am running into this problem now ... if it gets worse I will be
 unable to work. I have two questions:

 - this ticket is 3 years old. Is there a chance that the problem gets
 resolved in the near future?

 - how safe is ALTER TABLE wp_postmeta MODIFY meta_key varchar(191); - and
 can it be reversed to its former length without problems?
