 Hey @bmahr,

 Thanks for this ticket, and welcome to Trac!

 I do not believe that GitHub is officially an oEmbed provider, which is
 what WordPress embeds currently work as. Afe you able to find any
 information that says differently?

 GitHub does provide a dropdown at the top of each Gist to copy embed code
 to accomplish this without any changes to WordPress. There are also
 several plugins that will accomplish this.

 I am going to mark this as a candidate to close, pending further feedback.
