Comment (by ededu):

 It looks like database connection is successfully established because
 wpdb->db_connect() returns **true**

 The exception occurs later on, I'm not sure where.

 PS: I'm trying to debug this myself but I'm new to both PHP and WordPress.
 Any help would be much appreciated.
