Thanks for the offer, @jadonn! I've caught up with the log of the hosting
meeting, I agree with a lot of the discussion there. Hosts are in a unique
position to be able to collect a wide range of testing data and feedback,
and filter that into actionable items for us to work on. Depending on the
skills of the folks you're able to put onto this, I think there are three
major areas where you'd have the biggest impact:
- Support forums. If you have support folks who can help out with the
increased load we expect to see on the forums, that will be a huge help to
the forums team. Having support folks who are able to recognise and
diagnose similar issues across a wide range of sites means we can get
fixes out faster.
- Testing. Not necessarily front-line testing, but folks who are able to
take a reported problem, and turn it into a reproducible set of steps
would be wonderful. Getting bug fixes out as quickly as possible depends
on being able to consistently reproduce the bugs.
- Tools development. I saw some discussion about improving and
streamlining @danielbachhuber's plugincompat tool. Being able to build an
accurate snapshot of plugin compatibility means we can give end users the
best possible experience, regardless of which plugins they use. We can fix
compatibility issues where possible, and fall back to the classic editor
where it isn't.
----
@brianhogg: While Gutenberg is still a plugin, it will continue to have
the Classic Editor link, so people can easily switch back to the classic
editor, should they either be a user who can't disable plugins, or they're
not sure how.
Also, the admin notice doesn't disappear when you click "Try Today", it
only disappears if you click the "Dismiss" button. It re-appears if you
re-enable it in the "Screen Options" dropdown.
