 Since they have been there awhile now, they are used for many other
 things. So removing them now would impact more than just the narrow scope
 you have mentioned.
 I just submitted a theme that uses the existing images sizes in a list for
 the user to choose which one he wants for a theme option. I'm sure I'm not
 the only one. There are probably a lot of themes and plugins that use
 these image sizes.
