 Hi there,

 I'd like to start by clearing up a misconception, as Automattic does not
 maintain WordPress. It is an open source project, maintained by volunteers
 (although some companies donate development time to work on the project,
 it is in no way indicative of maintainership).

 As for the plugin question, when we release major versions of WordPress,
 we also include updates to bundled plugins (like the Akismet one is), but
 plugins may receive updates outside of core releases, and as such this is
 just a scenario that happens now and then and isn't something we can
 prevent.
