Hey friends! I've picked this up in the past week or so, and wanted to
share a proposed revision.

In general, this contains most of the content from the previous 3-column
direction, but it does so with a lot less text. That alone makes this much
less intimidating.
A concern I had with the previous direction was that it was full of
warnings + disclaimers ("we know there are still kinks", "weak points",
etc.) but didn't provide much in the way of motivation. If the goal of
this callout is to get people to try Gutenberg, we'll want to make sure we
put our best foot forward — while still being honest about the potential
for issues.
To that end, The copy received a rework (Thanks, Ben Humberman!) so that
it presents Gutenberg as something fresh and exciting, while still being
clear that Gutenberg is still under active development. For instance, the
headline uses the word "test" instead of "try". That's a bit of a
reposition for this callout, but I think it helps clearly set expectations
without relying on language that could be interpreted as apologetic.
In this version, I'm pairing the "Install" button with a secondary "Learn
More" button. I like the dual buttons in this case, as they slow the user
down just a little bit. It forces them to pause and make a decision rather
than just clicking the install button automatically. My thought is that
"Learn More" would link to wordpress.org/gutenberg/.
On the right, I've listed out a few of the finer details we introduced in
the 3-column version. These are all important to note, but hierarctically
they deserve to be secondary to the motivation: we don't want to scare
people away.
For the image on the left, I've inserted a simplified (blueprint) version
of the inserter, but this could easily be swapped out for a GIF as we'd
discussed earlier in this thread. I like the inserter becacuse it's a
cornerstone of the new interface, and it quickly implies the idea of
blocks.
Looking forward to feedback. 🙂
