Comment:

 I just did a fresh install of Wordpress and it seems the default had been
 changed to:
 `users_can_register = 0`

 I guess that will fix the majority of the abuse.

 For the cases where the registration option **is** wanted this abuse will
 keep happening, maybe a captcha or something like that will be able to
 solve the problem in those cases?
