 Thanks @Iceable and congratulation with your first patch.

 If this is the way to go (as there might be other approaches, as mentioned
 by @Mte90 ) then I wonder if it would make sense to abstract the main part
 of the {{{wp_widget_rss_output()}}} into a function or functions  to
 reduce the duplicated code? So {{{wp_widget_rss_output()}}} would be a
 wrapper. Or introduce some new input arguments to alter the output type of
 that function to make it easier to work with?
