"Meetup.com" and the string "central.wordcamp.org/schedule" to just
"WordCamp Central, or would that make translation harder?
I think it'd be better to replace that string with something else, because
it's not communicating the actual intent and primary benefit of the
update.
Our goal in bringing events to Core wasn't to make discovering individual
events slightly more convenient for the 1% of WP users who already know
about their local group. The goal was to make the community as a whole
discoverable to the 99% of users who don't even know that it exists.
People who already know about the community can just join a group and get
email notifications whenever a new event is published, so the convenience
thing wasn't a problem we were trying to solve (although it's a nice side-
effect).
[attachment:40721.3.diff] is an iteration on [attachment:40721.2.diff],
which suggests the following changes:
> A revamp of the dashboard news widget brings in nearby WordPress events,
including meetups and WordCamps. Discover all that our thriving offline
community has to offer!
>
> [...]
>
> Did you know that WordPress has a thriving offline community, with
groups meeting regularly in more than 400 cities around the world?
>
> Being part of the community can help you improve your WordPress skills,
and network with people you wouldn't otherwise meet. And now you can
easily find your local events just by logging in your dashboard.
I'm sure the phrasing/tone/etc needs some changes (or at least
refinement), but I think that general message is closer to what we should
be communicating.
I think "meetup" should always be lowercase, because we use it in generic
sense; it's not referring to Meetup.com specifically. There are a few
official groups that use other platforms, and we might migrate from
Meetup.com to another platform in the future.
