I don't think that makes it safe to deprecate. It's great to have replaced
Core's use of its own function, but Core isn't the only one using it (by
design). You have to consider what the impact on 3rd-party integrations
will be. And I don't think that filling people's logs with deprecation
notices is a viable one, especially if we don't provide a direct
equivalent for them to use (see my previous comment).
