I can only echo your sentiments @FolioVision.

What is the planned fix for 4.8.1? Am I correct in thinking that the
current plan is to create a new HTML widget? Is the recommended solution
to recommend that people move to that new type of widget? If so, this is
what my inbox is going to be filled with for the next few months:

'''Client:''' Why has the "........" widget stopped working?
'''Me:''' Are you using WordPress 4.8?
 '''Client:''' I think so.
'''Me:''' You will need to copy the content from the Text widget which
created this feature (make sure you switch to HTML view in the Text widget
first). Then create a new widget using the "HTML" widget type. Then paste
the previous HTML into this. If the widget still doesn't display correctly
then you may need to retrieve the HTML from the original source or from a
 backup of your site.
 '''Client:''' Why?
 '''Me:''' I don't know.
'''Client:''' I'm never updating WordPress again.
