Comment:

 Seeing as the default roles in WordPress are effectively hierarchical and
 it doesn't make sense for a user to have more than one of the default
 roles, I think this is best left up to a plugin to implement.

 Plugins such as [https://wordpress.org/plugins/members/ Members],
 [https://wordpress.org/plugins/user-role-editor/ User Role Editor], and
 [https://wordpress.org/plugins/bbpress/ bbPress] all provide interfaces
 for this.
