 @joyosly there is no need to add version in the question, there is no need
 to change the API request (and this is the good part, as it is backward
 compatible with the API requests back to 3.0 or even earlier, I checked
 down to 3.0).

 The API needs just the set of slug, author and author URI (all of which
 are currently being sent if present in style.css). Then everything is
 handled as described and magically it works and solves all the problems.
