 preferable. But that would mean ripping everything out and breaking the
 entire ecosystem, pretty much...

 This approach is a sort of "opt-in" improvement, which lets us fine-tune
 the usage by hand without breaking anything, and lets plugins/themes make
 use of this where it makes sense.
