Comment:

 This feels like too big a change for a 4.8.1, which, as I understand, is
 now being conceived more in our previous tradition of regression-only
 releases.

 I've reviewed the patch and it looks good so far as far as my hazy memory
 allows me to understand. @swissspidy If you are confident, let's put this
 into trunk for 4.9 so we can have time to suss out issues.
