just learned about this ticket (thanks @lukecavanagh) and also have a
problem with this stuff...
I think there should be clear disclosure of what info is sent where and
why - and also an opt-out opportunity.
Even if its to be left to individuals to use filters to change behavior
there still needs to be documentation. I am astounded that there seems to
be so much resistance to even documentation.

dialogue is a good thing, glad that this has gotten more attention
