 @lukecavanagh -- are you using Image Magick or GD as your graphics editor.
 If you can install the [https://wordpress.org/plugins/debug-media/
 Debug/Media plugins] and provide your output that would be great! Any
 changes to .htaccess/wp-config.php parameters would be welcome as well.


 BTW, I am assuming your upload didn't HTTP error and the thumbnail shows
 up ok in the media library?
