 With the work in 4.7 on #18302 it's a good time for this to be looked
 into. The new filepath functions: get_theme_file_path() and
 get_parent_theme_file_path() were introduced in 4.7 after my patch, so may
 be more contemporary functions to use than get_template_directory.

 Allowing for more subtle custom folder structures would avoid the
 excessive butchering such as roots.io.
