Comment:

 See #38203 for a fix to the meta API.

 The patch on that ticket prevents a regression when trying to save
 something to `wp_sitemeta` with a negative `site_id`.

 Currently, that is allowed _and_ I do that for versioning all of my custom
 global database tables, so there are for sure cases of this in the wild
 blocking using the meta-data API for this.
