Comment:

 [attachment:29158.left-border.1.diff] builds on [attachment:29158.left-
 border.diff] to improve the focus styles on the close button. These are
 based on the styling of the device preview buttons, which are also
 initially on an `#eee` background. Note that the close button will no
 longer be focused on load with #33228, which is marked for commit.

 Would be good to get some testing and feedback on this final solution so
 that we can make any tweaks and get this wrapped up.
