 Two key words here:
  - "visual" - we may support screen readers, but the raison d'etre is that
 it's a graphical instance.
 - "representation" - it doesn't have to be a photo, or any likeness of a
 person - it could be a company logo - so don't focus on what may or may
 not ''in'' the avatar, but what it stands for - it represents (typically)
 a single person.

 I'm not keen on the "follows", or "shared between websites" - the websites
 don't share it amongst themselves.
