 Merge deadline for this feature is 10/19, correct? We have 5 days. And it
 needs a formal feature proposal with time for feedback and broader
 discussion before that.

 The customize refactoring detailed in [comment:114] still needs to be
 implemented. Selective refresh support in particular is something that
 could be a major challenge. I'll have a more solid opinion on whether
 there's any chance of this being ready for 4.7 once at least a first pass
 of those changes is complete.

 As I've mentioned previously, the current approach in the theme will need
 adjustments to follow customizer best practices. However, that work
 wouldn't be too significant in terms of code (there would be design
 adjustments in the process).
