 [attachment:38391.2.patch] looks like it works well, @davidakennedy!

 The only issue I spotted is that the CSS selectors in custom-header.php
 had gotten out of date compared to style.css, so the custom text colour
 was being applied to the front page, but not the subpages.

 [attachment:38391.3.patch] tweaks the code a bit to address that.
