Comment:

 Yes, I think we should leave the filter in, it does no harm and won't
 break any compat. It's also useful in some situations as there's a filter
 per-var. @jnylen0 I'll setting this back to closed due to the explanation
 as I'm presuming this was re-opened as it was thought there it was
 overlooked. However, of course if you disagree I'm happy to discuss!
