Comment:

 In my initial tests, reading the first page with `[0]` didn't function as
 expected, and seemed to yield the same times (as setting the iterator
 after the fact).  Perhaps this was due to PDFs that were too small, or
 perhaps I did the tests incorrectly.

 Either way, I gave it another look after the feedback on this ticket, and
 it does seem to improve the state of things significantly.
