Comment:

 [attachment:31018-3.diff] is a direction I like.

 I'd like to see support for `ext/mysql` added to the patch before we
 commit to anything, though.

 If someone feels like picking it up, dusting it off, and adding some unit
 tests, I think we might be onto something.
