 Taxonomy queries were implemented as subqueries in #12891. It would be
 helpful to read back over that thread to understand the evolution of the
 idea.

 If there are ways we can mitigate the performance problem by index hinting
 in `WP_Query` itself, I'd like to see benchmarks.
