 By the way, I'm studying both our library ([https://github.com/humanmade
 /hm-rewrite hm-rewrite]) as well as [https://github.com/Brain-WP/Cortex
 Cortex] (mentioned in the Roots article); I'd love to know about any and
 every rewrite library that exists.

 (Once we've completed part 2, I'd also like to look at potentially
 reworking the internals to use either [https://github.com/nikic/FastRoute
 FastRoute] or a similar approach, but I want to walk/crawl first. ;) )
