Comment:

 I'll note that it is not a complicated technical change, but it has
 significant usability implications, particularly with the flow disruption
 of an added step. It can also be implemented in a plugin fairly easily in
 theory. I think it could cause many users to crop images unnecessarily.
 Would definitely want to see some usability research or targeted user
 testing.
