Comment:

 As mentioned before, it can be done by storing the EXIF data as IPTC. So
 before closing this, I first would like to know if something like
 http://wordpress.org/plugins/improved-gd-image-editor has a change to get
 into core. I think it's worth a shot since by default we do remove the
 meta data now anyway.
