 I suggest taking a look at this plugin, which seems to work for me, even
 with non-iOs images.

 Photos taken with some older cameras display fine in Windows Photo viewer,
 but they appear sideways in the Media Library after upload.  With this
 plugin installed, they appear properly oriented in the Media Library.
 Unfortunately, the "Crunching" time after upload was fairly long.
