 I am wondering whether it wouldn't be better to replace the
 `trigger_error()` call in the patch with a `_doing_it_wrong()` call.
 I realize that `_doing_it_wrong()` is more specifically intended for
 function calls, all the same, this issue very much feels like a
 `_doing_it_wrong` situation and notice.
