 I think the core question for this issue is, whether it's worth the
 significant effort for WordPress to implement a sandbox type feature to
 pursue a safer method for plugin updates and installs.

 We already have theme previews in the Customizer, which is a kind of
 sandbox. Why not have plugin previews, and previews for updates as well?
