 How about keeping the version number and perhaps also linking it to the
 about page?

 That way we could still choose to display the version as major,
 major.minor or major.minor.patch using option 1 or 2 as outlined in this
 ticket and if it also linked to about.php then along with the version
 number there is the rest of the About information.
