 Ok. I tried the various options you mentioned and while playing with the
 rectangle height doesn't seem to work well, I feel that combining the
 various effects could work:

 * Hover / Active have enough contrast thanks to the icon.
 * The shape is there, even if of a different color.
 * The selected one uses gray.

 I attached i3 with that concept.
