 I have had my blog in Wordpress since around 2006, I do not recall ever
 using the threading option for comments -- it is not currently set.

 I do have a number of comment_parent replies that contain a number other
 than zero. All of them appear to be replies I made to questions made back
 in the 2009 time frame.
