 I think this would be a very interesting enhancement and would make the
 front page setting much more flexible.

 It should be possible to either set a specific post (no matter what post
 type, think `public => true`) or a post type archive (think`has_archive =>
 true`) as the front page. I don't think a new `show_in_home_page_list`
 argument is really needed. A filter should suffice.

 Perhaps we need to look at the UI first? Related: #16379
