What if we just changed the wording so that the user does not expect the
blog to be on the front page?
Then the user wouldn't need to take any action, it wouldn't be as
intrusive as an admin notice asking the user to select a page.
And we wouldn't need to do any changes to the template hierarchy.
If the theme supports a static front page, change "Front page displays...
Your latest posts" to
"Front page displays... Your default front page" or similar.
