 FWIW the bug here is even a little wider-spread than I thought: in
 general, the dateCreated flag will be ignored for an updated Draft or
 Pending post, if it doesn't already have a date associated with it.

 So for example, independent of switching a post to "Published" status,
 simply trying to set a date on an existing Draft that was previously
 published without a date will fail.
