 Seeing it as an enhancement, how easy would it be to add this only to the
 API for now? It seems like adjusting `WP_Query` would be more future-
 proof.

 Considering that 4.7 should be released on Tuesday, this is more like 4.8
 material and we get enough time to change this once and for all with a
 proper dev-note etc.
