 This sounds like *exactly* the same problem I was experiencing. In my
 case, I got around the problem completely by using ImageMagick and
 ensuring that all images were in RGB format. If you're getting the same
 issue but with RGB images, then I guess the problem is deeper than the
 circumstances I could reproduce.
